The Racing NSW has upheld the world’s number one Jockey’s suspension. This means that Bowman will not ride Winx when she turns out in the Appollo Stakes. Bowman was suspended after a ride on Tsawlu at Warwick Farm. It means that he will not be available until February 15. He also received another ban at Auckland’s Karaka Million that added another one week on the ban. He is yet to appeal the Auckland’s ban and hopes that the punishment will be reduced.
According to the Racing NSW, the punishment could not be reduced by three weeks as it had been requested by Bowman. It said that the punishment was fair and adhered to its guidelines. Bowman was suspended for careless riding which he said was part and parcel of racing. He further said that he got a fair hearing and he will accept the verdict and move on. He desired to ride Winx to victory, but as things stand, the mare will be ridden by someone else. He said that it was not the end of everything for him and that he will be present to see Winx win.
Meanwhile, Winx trainer Chris Waller admitted that he had an alternative plan and that the results of the appeal will not affect it. He hinted that he is considering not having Winx contest the Appollo Stakes on February 17th. Winx was placed fifth in a trial at Sydney’s Rosehill Garden. Waller said that allowing her to contest depends on where she is in her preparation, and he may have to consider other risks as well. Having another jockey riding a horse like Winx is risky, and so they need to make the decision. He also said that Winx partners well with Bowman so breaking the partnership may not be easy and that it may be difficult to quantify the effect it will have on the mare. Bowman has had Winx in 22 races since 2014 with the worst performance being the second placing in the 2014 race. The mare has had several Cox Plate Triumphs. Humidor closed in fast In the 2017 edition and gave her a good challenge, but she managed to hold on and went ahead to win the race. It should be remembered that the mare’s winning run faced some serious challenge in the last years Warwick Stakes after missing the jump by 4 lengths. However, Bowman was able to steer her into the race after which she recovered during the final 200 meters and won the race.
